The Lake Lure Police Department was recently contacted by a local resident regarding the possibility of a scam taking place regarding a phone call soliciting money for a police organization.
It is important to know if you feel the need to gift or donate to any organization; it's best that you make an effort to find out who the organization is and their character or honestly first. There are many organizations that claim to help police in your area and or state, when in honesty, maybe less that 1% of your money or none at all, may go to law enforcement. Companies sit on the border of being fraudulent and being legal. This particular company that called our Lake Lure resident actually gave "some" donations to unnamed departments out of the millions of dollars they collected in a 10 year period. This amounted to less than $2700.
Please be cautious when organizations call you. Their claims to give money to your local police, may very well be fraudulent.
If you're concerned about an organization that's calling you or has called you, it's best to check them out before you open your heart and checkbook to them. You can always go online or go directly to the Better Business Bureau online to see what the organizations record is and if they've had any complaints.
