Serve a Minor and Get Served, with a Summons; No ID? No Sale! Police to conduct alcohol integrity checks

Franklin, TN – Between now and New Year’s, Franklin and Brentwood Police are teaming up with under-21, undercover police partners to test Franklin and Brentwood businesses who sell or serve alcohol.

In 2011, 257 people died on Tennessee roadways in alcohol-related crashes; 36 of them were under 21. “Local businesses that sell and serve alcohol are licensed and regulated by city and state government,” said Franklin Police Chief David Rahinsky. “We have an obligation to ensure that they’re acting responsibly. We demand their compliance with checking IDs, doing their part to keep alcohol out of the hands of teens.”

This is the first time that police in Williamson’s two biggest cities have teamed up on this type of operation. Brentwood Police Chief Jeff Hughes said, “Business owners in both cities should take the time to ensure that their employees are checking IDs on alcohol sales, or be prepared to face the consequences if they’re caught selling to a minor.”

Clerks caught in the upcoming joint-sting will be cited for Underage Sale of Alcohol, a Class-A misdemeanor punishable by a fine and time in jail. Business owners whose employees are caught selling alcohol to minors face additional civil penalties, including fines and potential loss of business permits.
