Arctic Blast Last Week Kept Trooper’s Busy

The arctic blast that paralyzed much of Indiana last week kept area trooper’s busy on the roads assisting motorists and working crashes and slide offs.

While much of the motoring public made the wise decision to wait out the storm that passed through last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday many yet ventured out and fell victim to the deep snow, slick roads and extreme temperatures.

In preparation for the storm the Indiana State Police suspended most officers’ days off and had extra units working the roadways across the state. The state police setup a Crisis Action Center (CAC) in Indianapolis that was staffed 24 hours a day during the event. They tracked all major storm related incidents that state police officers responded to. The CAC worked directly with the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) providing situational awareness and resource needs.

Locally trooper’s from the Bremen Post, which covers St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall and Kosciusko Counties responded to 180 calls for service which include assisting motorists and accidents. Trooper’s working out of the Toll Road Post responded to 683 calls for service along the 156 mile stretch of highway. This included 125 property damage accidents and 9 accidents involving injury.
