Parks Bureau Sergeant Deemed “L.A. County Star” by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Sergeant Roger Wallace, a 27-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was recognized by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as their January 2014 “L.A. County Star” recipient. Sergeant Wallace was acknowledged for his resourcefulness and initiative in acquiring U. S. Coast Guard Safe Boats from the Federal Excess Property Program.

In 2009, Sergeant Wallace was assigned to the Parks Bureau Transition Team regarding the Sheriff’s Department’s acquisition of the Office of Public Safety. He was assigned to develop and supervise the Parks Bureau Lake Operations at Castaic and Pyramid Lakes. The boat fleet inherited was aging and in need of replacement. Sergeant Wallace, familiar with the Federal Excess Property program, became aware of vessels being retired by the U.S. Coast Guard that would fit the mission of Parks Bureau as well as Marina Del Rey Station. He was relentless in his pursuit of the Safe Boat and had to compete with numerous Law Enforcement agencies throughout the country. The retired Safe Boat, valued at approximately $175,000.00, was obtained at the price of $11,000.00; a service fee required by the Federal Excess Program. This saved the Sheriff’s Department and County of Los Angeles approximately $164,000.00 for the boat.

Since that first boat was obtained and placed into service by Parks Bureau at Pyramid Lake, two more Safe Boats have been received at an additional cost savings of several hundred thousand dollars; currently pending deployment at Castaic Lake and Marina Del Rey. This procurement program began the standardization of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Boat fleet, which will save the County and the tax payers thousands of dollars. The newer vessels are safer, more efficient, and will ensure public safety on the lakes, and 75 miles of Los Angeles County coastline in the short and long term.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau is dedicated to providing a safe and drug free environment at all Los Angeles County Parks.
