Practice Grenade Results in Temporary Closure of CV Sheriff's Station Entrance

Practice Grenade Results in Temporary Closure of Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station Entrance

A World War II veteran brought a paper bag containing what he said was a training grenade into the front lobby of Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station at about 6:10PM on Sunday, January 19, 2014. The 84-year old man said he obtained the grenade from a friend’s widow who was trying to safely discard it.

After talking to deputies, the man placed the paper bag outside in the station's public parking lot.

For the safety of the public, and out of an abundance of caution, the public parking lot and front lobby was closed to visitors and traffic, and the Arson/Explosives Detail (Bomb Squad) of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was notified.

Investigators from the Arson/Explosives Detail arrived and took control of the grenade. They rendered the old grenade safe and the station was able to resume normal operations at about 7:25PM.

Sheriff's investigators determined the device was a World War II era practice grenade called a MK-II.

Old military ordnance is extremely hazardous and should not be handled.

“We recommend the public not touch, pick up, or transport anything that might be flammable or explosive," said Sergeant Acevedo of the Sheriff's Arson/Explosives Detail. “You should instead immediately call local authorities and let us render it safe where it is."

No criminal charges are pending. No one was injured.
