There has been a significant spike in Catalytic Converter thefts in Kankakee recently. In nearly all cases, the vehicle of choice by the criminals is the Chevrolet Cavalier. We have posted suggestions on how to combat this crime and try and reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim. The best way remains to be parking your vehicle in your garage if you have one. If not, try to park in well-lit areas that are in clear public view and away from larger vehicles which can conceal yours, such as next to large trucks in public parking lots.

In the past, the suspects were targeting public parking lots near malls, shopping centers, large stores and hospitals where the vehicles were hidden from public view. Lately, they seem to be watching the residential areas as well. Also, they mainly targeted two types of vehicles, Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire (although recently it appears to be solely the Chevy Cavalier).
On at least two separate occasions last fall, the suspect vehicle was a maroon SUV type vehicle, possibly a 2000’s model GMC Envoy or similar model, and possibly occupied by at least two subjects who can help each other watch while the other(s) steals the converters (photo's attached).
We remind you that these crimes only take moments to occur, and we urge you to take precautions by following the suggestions we mentioned above.
Lastly, we ask you to keep an eye on those around you in the parking areas, and to notify your local law enforcement agency if you witness any suspicious activity.
