SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LOW VISIBILITIES WILL MAKE TRAVEL HAZARDOUS FROM LATE THIS EVENING THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY EVENING.
TRAVEL THROUGH CHICAGO O'HARE AND MIDWAY AIRPORTS COULD ALSO BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS,
A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL,KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT, FOOD,AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
The Geneva Police Department advises that you should avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary during this time period. The roadways will become snow covered and treacherous very quickly. While our Public Works crews do a great job removing the snow, snow is predicted to fall at the rate of 1-2 inches per hour for a period of time tomorrow. This will make snow removal very difficult. If you cannot avoid driving during this storm, please leave extra time for travel, leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles on the roadway, give snow plow operators ample space, and assure that you are prepared should your vehicle become stuck or disabled.
The Geneva Police Department would also like to remind all residents that parking on all emergency snow routes is prohibited when the snowfall exceeds 2 inches or more. The snow emergency routes are primarily heavily travelled roadways/main arterial streets throughout the city. It is strongly recommended that residents remove their cars from the streets when a snow storm is forecasted to avoid being ticketed or having their vehicles towed. Parking is not permitted on secondary streets at any time within 12 hours following a snowfall of 3 inches or more or until a street has been plowed to the curb. There is a likelihood, that if the forecasted storm materializes as expected, that there will be a need to tow vehicles that are obstructing the work of the snow plow operators. Your cooperation and patience in removing your vehicles from the roadway is greatly appreciated.
