WINHALL POLICE & RESCUE PRESS RELEASE

Winhall , VT.- The Collaborative and the Winhall Police Department are pleased to announce that through funding from the Vermont Department of Health/Windham County Partnership for Success grant, they have set up a prescription drug collection box inside the Winhall Police Department at 113 VT Route 30 in Bondville. This service allows people from Bondville, Stratton, Londonderry and surrounding towns to safely dispose of their unused or expired prescriptions. When dropping of medicines, community members are asked to place their expired or unused Rx pills or patches in their original bottle or in a disposable bag. Personal information should be removed so that the drugs can be anonymously dropped in the Rx drop box.

Unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs have been determined to present substantial risks to our communities by either falling into the wrong hands, or by damaging our environment through improper disposal. Prescription drug take back services is one of the many initiatives The Collaborative implements in support of a healthy involved community and substance free youth.

According to Officer Greg Gould, “We've been learning not to dispose of our unwanted and expired medications by flushing them down the toilet where they could contaminate the ground water. We know we're not supposed to throw them out and that it's dangerous to keep them around the house. Now we have an easy and cost free way to dispose of these items. If our residents can't come to our office to use the drop box, we will have an officer go to their house to pick up the medications. They just have to call us at 802-297-1013.”

Winhall Chief of Police and Rescue, Jeffrey Whitesell Sr. added “This program will help keep drugs out of the hands of young people and criminals by providing the public a convenient 24/7 place to safely discard their expired and unused medications. We will be continuing to work with "The Collaborative" in order to make Winhall and surrounding areas safer.”
