Police Volunteers Celebrated for Service; Small group, big hearts, service-centered

Franklin, TN – You see them at community events like parades and 5k races, and standing alongside on-duty police officers. Working hard to help keep the City safe, Franklin Police Volunteers do it not for a paycheck, but for their community.

These 14 men and women in royal blue are proud to serve alongside Franklin Police Officers, but Franklin Police Chief David Rahinsky insists that the pleasure is his and the officers’. “Keeping Franklin safe requires a partnership between the police and the community. We take pride in the relationships that have grown into today’s Franklin Police Volunteer program. The members of that dedicated team give selflessly of their time. People like that are who make Franklin special.”

Franklin Police Volunteers are non-sworn, unpaid members of the Department who assist with a variety of non-enforcement
work like traffic and crowd control at events, and patrolling the downtown area on foot as ambassadors and an extra set of eyes and ears, armed only with a police radio to report suspicious behavior and emergencies.

In 2013, Franklin Police Volunteers donated 1,238 hours of service. Volunteer Craig Owens received special recognition for donating 245 hours of his time – all in support of this community, its residents, and our officers.

Becoming a Franklin Police Volunteer is not easy. Members are required to be graduates of Franklin’s Citizens’ Police Academy, and undergo monthly instruction on the delivery of supplemental police services.
