Campus Phone Threat at LA Valley College

Campus Phone Threat at LA Valley College

On Thursday, February 6, 2014, at about 9 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Community College Bureau deputies received a phone call from a person saying a woman had made a threat to shoot up LA Valley College. Details were provided as to the likely identity of the suspect.

Deputies immediately began a search of the campus and worked with campus administrators.

Classes were cancelled and the campus of about 700 students and faculty were evacuated as a precaution at the direction of Los Angeles Valley College President in partnership with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Community College deputies. Winter session final exams were taking place this week.

Deputies searched the campus and saw no visible threat. When the search had concluded, nothing and no one suspicious was found. Campus administrators and faculty were able to return to campus about noon, and Los Angeles Valley College resumed activities and classes at 5:00PM.

Meanwhile, following leads, sheriff’s deputies with the assistance of officers with the Los Angeles School Police and Los Angeles Police Department located the 19-year-old female suspect at her home in Panorama City at about 10:30 a.m. The suspect was the person who had been described by the caller as the person who had made the threat that the caller had heard.

The suspect was detained by deputies at her residence and she was cooperative. She denied making any threats. Deputies obtained a search warrant and no weapons were found. The suspect was not arrested. Deputies are following up on who made the call the investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Deputies would like to talk with the person who made the phone call and ask that the person call the Sheriff’s Community College Bureau at 323-669-7555.
