Atmospheric River headed toward Truckee/Northstar/Tahoe.
An atmospheric river reached the northern CA coast as expected this morning and the forecast is on track for periods of heavy rain, heavy snow, and strong winds this weekend. The main forecast change from yesterday is snow levels are expected to rise a bit faster than previously thought and the total amount of precipitation is also expected to be higher.
Saturday Afternoon - Sunday night -- This is prime time for our atmospheric river. Confidence is high for periods of heavy rain/snow, with the best spillover into western Nevada Saturday night into Sunday. Snow levels may be as high as around 8500 feet Saturday night. Runoff from heavy rain will lead to sharp rises on some creeks Saturday night into Sunday morning with potential for small creek flooding. Snow levels are forecast to lower Sunday, possibly as low as 7000 feet by Sunday afternoon.
With the potential for flooding Northstar Community Service District has prepared sand bags for public use. If you need assistance in obtaining sandbags or have problems with flooding contact the Northstar Fire Department at 530-562-1212 ext. 4.
