Note:
Recently, there was an arrest of a man involved in a scam in which he likely victimized hundreds of elderly drivers. He would follow elderly drivers to their homes from public places and then put some paint which matched his own vehicle’s color on the rear bumper of their cars. He would then door knock their house and confront the elderly person (typically in their 70’s or 80’s) and claim that they had just backed into him at the place that he or she just returned from. He would intimidate them by saying that they shouldn’t be driving if they didn’t even know they had hit someone and that it could be considered a hit and run. Then he offers to not involve their costly insurance if they would pay him cash for the repairs. And sadly, too often these folks would accompany him to an ATM and hand cash over to him. The elderly are especially vulnerable in that they don’t want to lose their independence. Please consider the elderly loved ones in your families and neighborhoods. Take the time to discuss with them some of the various scams that are becoming increasingly prevalent in our communities as our population ages and is increasingly vulnerable to these sophisticated scams.
