Suspect Arrested with Weapons on Campus
On Thursday, February 13, 2014 at approximately 7:16 p.m., cadets from the Santa Rosa Junior College District Police Department (SRJCPD) observed what appeared to be several visible weapons in the passenger area of an unoccupied vehicle on Burbank Circle (fronting Pioneer Hall Bookstore). Officers responded and visually inspected the vehicle and confirmed what appeared to be a assault rifle and a pistol style handgun in the rear passenger seat. Additionally, the officers observed what appeared to be two large fixed blade style knives sticking out from underneath the front of the driver’s seat.
Officers set up surveillance on the vehicle and a short time later a subject approached the vehicle and entered in to the driver’s seat, District Police Officers affected a high risk enforcement stop and the vehicle’s lone occupant was taken into custody without further incident.
Afterwards, officers retrieved two handguns and one rifle from the passenger area of the vehicle and an additional handgun and rifle were located in the trunk of the vehicle. Also in the passenger area were three fixed blade tactical combat style knives and one machete with a total length of 27 inches.
The guns were found to be replica firearms that fired pellets (see accompanying picture). All five of the replica firearms closely resembled real weapons with only small indicators printed on the frame to indicate they were pellet guns. Two of the replica handguns had only small print on the frame reading “.177 cal (.45 mm)”, indicating they were pellet guns. The rifles were identified as pellet guns through similar small print but closely resembled an assault rifle and one hunting style rifle with a wood stock.
The owner of the vehicle who was in possession of the weapons was identified as Nicholas Dusan Grgich, a 19 year old Sonoma resident and a current SRJC Student. Grgich was placed under arrest for four counts of felony possession of a weapon on school grounds - California Penal Code section 626.10(b). He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail with a total bail amount set at $10,000.
