NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Deputy Involved (Hit) Shooting that occurred on the 1100 block of Pacific Coast Highway, Long Beach.
On Friday, at approximately 12:20pm, Deputies from Lakewood Sheriff’s Station located a named suspect who was wanted for an assault on a police officer. The suspect, a male Hispanic 37-years-old, was located at a motel in the 1200 block of East Pacific Coast Highway, in the city of Long Beach. When deputies attempted to contact him, the suspect got into his car and tried to escape. As the suspect tried to exit the motel parking lot he attempted to run a deputy over with his vehicle. This is when a deputy involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was hit by the gunfire and crashed his car into a fence. The suspect continued to try to accelerate the vehicle, causing only the tires to spin, but the car was stuck on a concrete median and was unable to move. Once the suspect realized he could no longer escape, he surrendered and was taken into custody. A search of the suspect revealed that he had a loaded handgun strapped to his body.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
There is no further information at this time.
