Riley Firefighters hampered by extreme cold during residence fire.
At 2:06am on Saturday, February 15th Riley FD responded to a report of a residence fire on Red Bud Lane in Timberlake’s Subdivision near State Road 46 & Lama Street North of Riley. Firefighters were advised by the homeowner, Matthew and Megan Higginbotham that upon arriving at their home minutes prior to the 911 call, found smoke inside the residence. The owners had been away from the residence for several hours. Firefighters found the fire had started in the first floor but had spread to the homes 2nd floor and attic space and appeared to have been burning for some time. Firefighters were hampered by -6 degree temperatures which created water supply problems with frozen equipment. The home was under construction at the time of the fire which contributed to the quick spread of the fire throughout the home. The home was considered a total loss. The Higginbotham family was provided shelter by the American Red Cross and the home was insured. Due to the extensive damage a cause of the fire will be likely remain undetermined.
Honey Creek, Seelyville, Sugar Creek and Pierson Township Fire Departments assisted during the event. Firefighters were on the scene for over 4 hours. No one was injured in the fire.
