A local man was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges early Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal an RV camper and then fleeing from Garland County sheriff’s deputies.
Daniel Lee Fite, 18, who lists an address of 100 Rebecca St., was taken into custody shortly before 4 a.m. in the 900 block of Brady Mountain Road in Royal and charged with a felony count of theft of property, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of fleeing on foot and criminal trespass.
He was later released on $5,250 bond and is set to appear March 4 in Garland County District Court.
According to reports, around 3 a.m., Garland County sheriff’s Sgt. Scott West and Deputies Stacy Morgan and Clayton Green were dispatched to a theft in progress at 901 Brady Mountain in which the male resident, 52, called to report two people were attempting to steal an RV camper next to his house and he had them at gunpoint.
Upon arrival, Morgan states he made contact with the resident who told him the two male suspects had fled on foot into the woods. The deputy noted a black 1994 Ford pickup with both the driver and passenger side doors open.
West called for GCSD Deputy Richard Huffman to respond with his canine partner, Cal, who began a search of the area and quickly located one suspect, later identified as Fite, lying on the ground about 100 yards into the woods attempting to hide.
A cellphone was found on the ground near him along with a flashlight and dollar bill. He was taken into custody without incident as the other deputies continued to search the area.
Shortly before 4:30 a.m., the search for the other suspect was terminated and the pickup was towed.
