On 2/26/14, at approximately 3:10 pm, the Campbell Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle that had collided into a house at the intersection of Westmont Avenue and San Tomas Aquino Road. Witnesses reported that an Acura Integra had been traveling eastbound on Westmont Avenue when it appeared to accelerate through the intersection at San Tomas Aquino Road.
The Acura collided with a metal pillar and continued through a fence and into the backyard, striking the home. The driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by a neighbor who witnessed the collision. Upon officers’ arrival, it was determined that there was an adult female and two children also in the vehicle at the time of the collision. All four of the vehicle’s occupants were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
After officers began investigating what led up to the collision, it became apparent that the collision was an intentional act by the driver. The driver appeared to have accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to harm both the occupants of the vehicle and himself. During the investigation, officers also determined that the driver was under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest for attempted homicide and driving under the influence.
The driver was identified as Anthony McSherry Jr, 27 years of Campbell. He has been released from the hospital and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
The three other occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and have all been released from the hospital.
