Advisory

Accident & OWI arrest

On Saturday, March 1, 2014, at approximately 8:00 A.M., Sgt. Jay Niles of the Columbia Township Police Department was dispatched to an accident at Jackson Street and Woodstock Street in the Village of Cement City.

On arrival, Sgt. Niles determined that the driver of a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer had left the roadway and struck two road signs (one a stop sign), and had gotten hung up on one of them. It was also quickly determined that the driver had been drinking, and following roadside field sobriety tests, a preliminary breath test revealed a blood alcohol level of approximately .232%. Located in the cupholder of the vehicle was a red cup of alcohol.

The driver, a 23 year-old resident of Cement City, was arrested for OWI, then transported to Allegiance Hospital for a blood draw, and then to the Jackson County Jail where he was lodged. He was not injured in the accident.

As he has not yet been arraigned on the charge, his name is not being released at this time.
