Maricopa Fire Department Adds Decades of Experience

As a young and developing department Maricopa Fire was in critical need of proven, industry leadership amongst its senior staff. To increase the level of service delivery to the community a nationwide search was initiated. However, little did the organization know the answer was as close as the Phoenix metro area. Over the past 6 months the Maricopa Fire Department has added nearly 90 years of valuable experience to its command staff from the valley.

Most recently, on February 3rd, newly appointed Assistant Fire Chief in charge of operations Bobby Miller began his tenure with the Maricopa Fire Department. Chief Miller brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will directly improve the quality of service to the City of Maricopa.

With a career spanning 30 years with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, Bobby Miller retired in September of 2009. While with the department Miller held positions including, firefighter, engineer, response captain, training captain, battalion chief, training chief, shift commander, and east deputy chief.

After gaining 20 years of real world experience Chief Miller made the decision to begin teaching the younger generation within the fire service. In 1999 he became an instructor at Mesa Community College teaching various firefighting classes including, Fire Apparatus, Hydraulics, Tactics and Strategies, and Command Strategies for Major Emergencies. Chief Miller is also a major contributor to the Virtual Incident Command Center (V.I.C.C.). At the 3500 sq/ft facility located in the downtown Mesa campus, the V.I.C.C. focuses on training all ranks within the fire service in critical areas ranging from fires to terrorist attacks.

Chief Miller’s primary professional passions are employee development and developing effective incident commanders. With his combination of operational and training experience Chief Miller will be an invaluable resource in the career development of current and future members of the Maricopa Fire Department.

Chief Miller has been married to his loving wife Kathy for 34 years and has two children, daughter Sarah and son Matthew. Sarah is married to a Gilbert firefighter and Matthew is also a firefighter in Gilbert. Chief Miller loves spending time with his 3 grandkids Blake, Everett, and Harper, vacationing in Hawaii and completing home improvement projects.
