A traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle by Garland County sheriff’s deputies early Tuesday led to the arrest of a Hot Springs man and woman on felony drug charges.
Timothy Brian Sheffield, 23, who lists an address of 122 Lisa Place, and Abbie Gail Davis, 22, who lists an address of 305 Jimmie Coleman Road, were both taken into custody shortly before 10 a.m. and charged with possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamines, with purpose to deliver, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Davis, who was also charged with a misdemeanor count of obstructing government operations, punishable by up to one year in jail, was still being held without bond Wednesday while Sheffield was released on $5,000 bond. Both are set to appear March 18 in Garland County District Court.
According to reports, around 9:15 a.m., GCSD Sgt. Bill House pulled into the parking lot at Road Runner at Albert Pike and Thornton Ferry Road and noticed a white older model Chevrolet S-10 Blazer beside him that looked odd, as if it had been parked or setting up for a long time.
He noted it had a Georgia license plate with a March 2014 sticker and later, as it pulled away, he noted it drove around the parking lot to the far right driveway to turn left on Mountain Pine Road, when it could have gone straight out of the lot and through the traffic light.
He ran an ACIC check and the plate returned to a red 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, so he followed it as the vehicle turned onto McGrew Road and tried to turn into a field. By that time, GCSD Cpl. Greg Kellar and Mountain Pine Police Chief Chad King had arrived and they stopped the vehicle at the corner of McGrew and Mountain Pine Road.
As they approached the vehicle, the driver, identified as Sheffield, “became very nervous and did not want officers near his vehicle,” House states, and admitted he had no insurance and showed him a handwritten bill of sale.
After checking the vehicle identification number, the registration showed to be suspended for not having insurance in an accident and the vehicle having unsafe tires.
The front seat passenger, identified as Davis, stepped out to speak to officers and Sheffield reached across to lock the passenger door behind her. After he was asked to get out, he also locked his door behind him.
Officers opted to impound the vehicle due to the suspended registration and bad tires, and conducted an inventory prior to towing. They located a brown backpack behind the driver’s seat which held a camera case which contained three plastic bags of suspected ICE or meth, so Sheffield was arrested.
Davis was standing in front of House’s unit and when asked about the suspicious activity she allegedly gave them two different stories and two different locations that they were going to and told them she could not pass a drug test if given one.
When told Sheffield was being arrested on drug charges, Davis reportedly stated she didn’t know anything about the drugs and Sheffield told them the drugs were his and not hers.
Agents with the 18th Judicial District East Drug Task Force responded to the booking room and took possession of the drugs which field tested positive for meth, approximately 3 grams.
In addition to the felony charge, Sheffield was cited for no insurance, fictitious tags and driving an unsafe vehicle.
