A Job Corps employee listed as a trainee was arrested Wednesday morning at the center after allegedly injuring a student during an altercation between them.
David Joseph Metcalfe Jr., 22, who lists a Dermott address, was taken into custody at the center, located at 570 Job Corps Road, shortly before 9:30 a.m. and charged with first-degree assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. He was later released on a citation and is set to appear March 18 in Garland County District Court. According to reports, around 9 a.m., Garland County sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Wharton was dispatched to the Job Corps regarding two people who had been in a fight and made contact with the victim, 17, a student who lists a Chandler, Texas, address.
The victim states that between 6 and 7 a.m., he and the suspect, identified as Metcalfe, got into an argument and the suspect pushed him to the ground and began choking him and slammed his head against a bed frame.
Wharton noted the victim had redness and bruising to his neck and the victim stated he had a knot on his head from hitting the bed frame. The report didn’t indicate if the victim sought medical attention.
Wharton then spoke to Metcalfe, who stated he told the victim to take a shower and an argument ensued. He states the victim charged at him and he placed him on the ground and held him down to keep him from fighting.
He states he let go of the victim “when he saw that he was turning blue.” Metcalfe was taken into custody without incident.
