Did you know?
Theft of items from a vehicle is one of the most common reported crimes in the City of Tustin. In fact, there were over 460 reported incidents throughout 2013. The Tustin Police Department is committed to reducing the prevalence of these incidents. Not only do victims feel their sanctity has been violated, they have lost personal and, often times, valuable items. Below is a collection of tips you can employ to reduce your chances of becoming a victim.
- Lock and secure your vehicle.
Of the various methods of entry criminals use to get into your vehicle, an unlocked or unsecured vehicle is by far the easiest for them. Make sure all doors are closed and windows are rolled up. Always lock your vehicle and utilize the audible alarm system if your vehicle has it.
- Keep your valuables out of the vehicle and out of plain sight.
These are typically crimes of opportunity, meaning the criminal targets what is easily available at the time. Items such as purses, wallets, checkbooks, credit cards, jewelry, gate remotes, briefcases, portable GPS/navigation systems, computers, cell phones, keys, etc. are commonly left out in the open in many vehicles. Completely removing your valuables from the vehicle is the best option; however, keeping your items out of plain sight is the next best option.
- Park in a secured, well-lit area and/or well-traveled area.
Utilize your garage if you have one to store your vehicle. Park in well-lit and highly visible parking stalls. If possible, stay away from stairwells, elevators, dumpsters, and any dark areas. Consider parking in view of a surveillance camera if the location has one present.
- Report suspicious activity.
Police personnel work diligently to keep the community safe. To be the most effective policing agency, we employ the philosophy of Community Governance. This involves an active partnership between the Tustin Police Department and other city departments, the residential and business community, and other governmental and non-profit agencies. YOU are every bit as important in the crime fighting process as we are.
