Faster, more reliable Wi-Fi (wireless, high speed) connections and Internet service are on their way to the Chula Vista Public Library. To accomplish this major re-cabling and re-wiring project as safely and quickly as possible, two library branches will each close for approximately one week. The Civic Center Branch, 365 F Street, will close from Monday, March 10, through Sunday, March 16, reopening Monday, March 17, at its normal time of 10 a.m. The South Chula Vista Branch, 389 Orange Avenue, will be closed Friday, April 18, through Sunday, April 27, and will reopen on Monday, April 28, also at 10 a.m. The Otay Ranch Branch Library, in the Otay Ranch Town Center, will remain open during its normal hours and will not be affected by these closures. Library staff will be transferred to other locations during the upgrades.

Checked-out materials may still be deposited in the branches’ book return bins during the closures. As a convenience to the public, return dates for library items due during each branch’s closures will be adjusted to the date of reopening. “This is a much needed project,” says Library Director Betty Waznis. “It will give us faster downloads, and accelerated, more reliable Wi-Fi. With the increase in our Internet connectivity speed and strength, library visitors and staff will be able to work online quickly and reliably. All access to the information superhighway depends on data lines and connectivity, and by re-cabling, we can provide our public with the excellent access they expect and deserve.”

Funding for this project comes from Public, Educational, and Governmental (PEG) access fees provided to the City as a result of franchise agreements with Cox Cable and AT&T. PEG funds can be used for the capital purchase and installation of infrastructure that promote or expand public access to government information and education resources.
