Traffic Stop, suspicious item determined not a threat.

On March 12, 2014 at 1737 hours the Windsor Heights Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Impala at Interstate 235 near 22nd Street for Failing to Yield to a Traffic Signal. During the course of this investigation and impound of the vehicle, a suspicious object was located in the vehicle and determined to be a grenade. Persons in and around the area were moved to a safe distance and one lane of traffic was closed. Officers requested assistance from the Des Moines Bomb Squad who arrived and removed the grenade from the scene. It was determined that this item was not an active or live threat. Officers did not locate any other hazardous ordinance and the scene was determined to be safe.

The driver of this vehicle was arrested unrelated to the suspicious item for misdemeanor charges of: Carrying Weapons, Possession of Controlled Substance Sch. I, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Lee Nelson was transported to Polk County Jail on $3,300 bond.
