A routine traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a teenage girl on multiple charges after she allegedly lied about her identity and fled from Garland County Sheriff’s deputies early Thursday.
The suspect, 17, of Hot Springs, who was wanted for a probation violation, was taken into custody shortly before 1 a.m. and charged with resisting arrest and obstructing government operations, misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in jail. There was also a pickup order for her regarding the revocation of her probation.
She was being held without bond at the Garland County Detention Center pending a hearing in Garland County Juvenile Court. The Sentinel-Record follows The Associated Press privacy policies and does not publish the names of juvenile offenders unless they are charged as adults.
According to reports, shortly before 12:30 a.m., GCSD Deputy Clayton Green was eastbound on Airport Road when he got behind a silver Toyota and noticed the license plate light was hanging down past the plate, with the wires blocking part of the number.
He also noted the driver almost stopped in the middle of the road when he changed lanes attempting to read the plate.
He stopped the vehicle in the 1200 block of Airport in a parking lot and the driver, a white female, got out of the vehicle and came toward him. He told her to stop and asked her for ID, but she claimed she didn’t have one on her.
She gave him a name and date of birth and dispatch found a listing for a female by that name, but the birth date was slightly different. He had her get back in the car and got ID from the other passengers in the vehicle.
One of the backseat passengers, also 17, gave the same name the driver had given so he had her get her guardian on the phone. Green spoke to her guardian who indicated she would come and pick her up.
When the guardian came to pick up the passenger she was talking to her and referred to the driver by her real first name. The deputy then recognized the driver from past dealings with her at the juvenile detention center and remembered her full name.
He asked her why she had lied about her name and she allegedly “took off running” chased by Green and Deputy Bennie Strickland. They caught up to her after about 10 yards and Green attempted to grab hold of her arm as she was pulling away.
In the process, her jacket and shirt came off and he told her to stop resisting, but she continued to struggle. She was taken to the ground with minimal force and as Green attempted to handcuff her she wouldn’t give him her arm and continued resisting.
She was finally taken into custody and then dispatch informed Green of the pick-up order for her for the probation revocation. She was taken to the detention center and intake officer Sharon Smith put a hold on her.
