The Columbia Township Police Department investigates burglary.
The Columbia Township Police Department was recently dispatched to investigate a burglary in the 7000 block of Cement City Road, which has resulted in the identification of the two juveniles responsible for the burglary.
On Saturday, March 22, 2014, at approximately 9:30 A.M., Officer Josh Hudson was contacted by a resident that reported to him the burglary of a pole barn in the 7000 block of Cement City Road. The owner had arrived at that location and found forced entry to the pole barn. Officer Hudson arrived, found one attempted point of entry, and a second successful entry point. A search of the building determined the suspects had already left the scene.
Besides the damage from the forced entry (torch and sledge hammer), other damage was located throughout the building. It was quickly determined that there had been two suspects. The suspects had moved a vehicle outside the building in an attempt to steal it, and had successfully stolen a moped. Sgt. Niles assisted with processing the scene, and Officer Hudson began canvassing the neighborhood, as well as following footprints of the suspects.
After tracking footprints of the suspects for ½ to ¾ of a mile, Officer Hudson located the stolen moped at a residence near Cement City Road and Brooks Meadow Drive. Contact was made with the female resident there, and information was obtained regarding her 12 year old son, who was not home at the time, as well as a 13 year old male from Napoleon. Other evidence was gathered from the residence.
As both juveniles were currently away from the residence, arrangements were made with the parents to bring them in to the Police Department that afternoon. The parents of both juveniles were completely cooperative. Both juveniles admitted to the burglary and the other related crimes, and were released to their parents.
The report will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor for review of charges of burglary, malicious destruction of property, and unlawfully driving away an automobile.
