A check on a suspicious female roaming through yards on Hershell Road Sunday morning led to her arrest on felony and misdemeanor charges.
Denise Rochelle Maciel, 27, who lists an address of 107 Skippy Lane, was taken into custody shortly after 11 a.m. and charged with a felony count of residential burglary, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, punishable by up to one year in jail, and public intoxication.
She remained in custody Monday in lieu of $6,500 bond and is set to appear April 15 in district court.
According to reports, around 10:30 a.m., GCSD Deputy Matthew Wharton was dispatched to the 300 block of Hershell Road, located off the 2300 block of Airport Road, regarding an unknown woman walking through residents’ yards and sitting on the porch of a female resident, 61, on Hershell Loop.
Upon arrival, Wharton located the suspect, identified as Maciel, walking in a wooded area near the dead end of Hershell and asked her what she was doing and she stated she was “just walking” and didn’t know why everybody was “freaking out.”
He asked her where she was headed and she said she was going to her place of work in Hot Springs. Wharton noted Maciel was uneasy on her feet, spilling water from a bottle she held onto her feet and pants, and she had blood spots on her jacket sleeve and a fresh bloody bruise on her right forearm.
Wharton asked her when she had last used illegal substances or alcohol and she stated it had been at least two weeks. She denied having any contraband on her person and the deputy had her empty her pockets on the trunk of his unit.
Wharton reportedly saw a long, thin object in her pocket and asked her what it was and she said it was nothing. He removed it and found it to be a syringe. Maciel consented to a breathalyzer which registered her blood-alcohol content at 0.01 percent.
She was taken into custody for the drug paraphernalia and public intoxication and while en route to the detention center she allegedly told Wharton, “You are sexy as h - - - !” and then stated she was “starving and dehydrated and for more than just food and water.”
She allegedly asked why she had to go to jail and claimed she was raped, but when Wharton tried to question her further about it she could not give a coherent response and wasn’t making sense.
She allegedly made several sexually explicit comments to Wharton, offering sex if he wouldn’t take her to jail and that he could “make up any story you want” and she wouldn’t tell. Once at the jail, she again stated she was raped and made sexual comments to the deputies there.
She asked one female booking deputy if she could “get some Xanax, marijuana and Adderall.”
Later that evening, Wharton was informed by the female resident on Hershell Road that Maciel had dropped two bags before she was taken into custody. Wharton went back and found two purses at that location and found ID inside identifying them as belonging to the victim from Hershell Loop.
The victim was able to describe several items missing from her residence which had all been found in Maciel’s possession at the time of her arrest, including a mesh bag with clothing and a PlayStation 2 that belonged to the victim’s son. Maciel was later charged with the burglary count.
