Winter Storm Watch for our area is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. 6-10 inches anticipated.
Good Morning -
Summary Confidence remains high that a heavy wet snow will occur across much of the region from Thursday afternoon through Friday with amounts from 6 to 12 inches by late Friday afternoon. The heaviest snow is forecast to fall from southwest Minnesota through the Twin Cities and into northern Wisconsin (see attached image). The precipitation will come in two parts. The first will begin late tonight through Thursday morning as a wintry mix lifts northward. The second is a heavier band of snow that will develop Thursday afternoon across western Minnesota, and shift SLOWLY eastward overnight and Friday. An updated Recorded Hazardous Web Briefing will be posted on our website by 10am this morning.
Current watches, warnings, and advisories
• UPDATE: Winter Storm Watch now in effect for ALL of the MPX CWA from Thursday afternoon through Friday (see attached image).
o Heavy snow spreading from west to east from Thursday afternoon through Friday (6-12" total).
o NW winds increasing on Friday to 25 mph, with gusts near 35-40 mph.
Impacts
• Travel will be impacted:
o Thursday evening commute, especially in western/central MN.
o Friday morning commute, especially in eastern MN and western WI.
• The heavy wet snow could also cause power outages as northwest winds gusts near 35-40 mph Friday.
Confidence and Timing
• Confidence is high that a storm will spread a wide swath of heavy snow from SW to NE across the Upper Mississippi Valley.
• Confidence is medium in the exact placement of this 6-12" swath of snow.
• A wintry mix will fall late Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
• The main band of heavy snow will be Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.
