RFD Speaks to Washington High School Students About Car Seat Safety
Division Chief Kevin Murphy along with nursing students from Indiana State University spoke to the students of Booker T. Washington High School today on Child Passenger Safety.
Division Chief Murphy who has been a Certified Child Passenger Seat Technician since 2008 spoke to the students about the need to ensure their children are properly restrained while riding in an automobile. The students were also provided with educational material and instruction on proper child passenger safety and car seat installation.
Statistics show that at least four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child safety seat can lead to severe injury and or death. The students were encouraged to schedule an appointment with Riley Fire Department to have their car seat installation checked. Riley Fire Department is one of four Permanent Fitting Stations located within Vigo County. These permanent child safety seat inspection stations are staffed by nationally certified child passenger safety seat technicians who will inspect car seats and instruct families how to properly secure them in their vehicles. Appointments can be made with the technicians during normal business hours.
The Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving is funding this program with technical support provided by the Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University School of Medicine.
