Parks Bureau Mounted Enforcement Detail puts on Demonstration for Local Girl Scouts
On Saturday, April 5, 2014, members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Parks Bureau Mounted Enforcement Detail (MED) under the command of Captain Holy N. Perez met with two Girl Scout Troops at Eaton Canyon Nature Center (1750 North Altadena Drive, Pasadena). The meeting was a field trip requested by the Girl Scouts who are from the Montrose area and were excited to learn about horses. The deputies, who were at the park to conduct their regular patrol duties, allowed the Scouts to groom, bridle, saddle and lead the horses. Sgt. Joe Haertsch said that at one point the horses must’ve felt they were getting a spa treatment when six Scouts were grooming one horse at a time and did not want to stop. He was afraid that the horses were going to get spoiled with all of the special treatment. The MED Team did a demonstration and posed for pictures with for the Scouts who were appreciative for taking the time to show them the horses.
Soon after the demonstration, the MED Team responded to a male screaming for help up in the canyon above the park. The Montrose Search and Rescue Team responded and determined that the terrain was too steep for the horses. On the way back to their trailers, they arrested a person who was wanted on three arrest warrants. Just another day in the park for the MED Team.
