Financial Advisor Accused for Financial Abuse of Elderly
At approximately 11:15 AM, on Saturday, April 19, 2014, Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Fraud and Cyber Crimes Bureau served an arrest warrant on the 10800 block of New Street, Downey, and arrested 45 year-old Jose Carbajal for Financial Abuse of the Elderly.
The investigation began in August 2013, when an elderly victim contacted deputies at the Lakewood Station and told them she received a $125,000, tax bill from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The elderly woman learned from the IRS that the tax bill resulted from a large monetary transfer associated with her investment account, which was managed by Carbajal, who is an independent certified financial advisor. As the investigation progressed additional victims were identified, including a Baptist Mission.
A search warrant was served at Carbajal’s home in August 2013. At that time records were seized and Carbajal was made aware of the investigation.
On Thursday, April 17, 2014, detectives learned of a Financial Planning Seminar in the city of Downey where the guest speaker was Jose Carbajal. Elder Fraud Detectives were concerned that additional people would be victimized by Carbajal; therefore, worked closely and diligently with the District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Section to bring the investigation to completion. Charges were filed and an arrest warrant was obtained late Friday, April 18, 2014.
Carbajal was arrested at the seminar which was attended by six people. Carbajal was booked at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station and is being held in lieu of $325,000 bail.
