DEA Drug Take Back Day http://www.portsmouthpd.us/announcements/events/
The Portsmouth Police Department is proud to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.) annual “Drug Take Back Initiative” event. This event will give the public a chance to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused or unwanted prescription medication in an effort to prevent theft, pill abuse and accidental overdoses. On Saturday, April 26, 2014 between the hours of10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M., officers with the Portsmouth Police Department will be manning three drop off locations for citizens to bring their unwanted medication to, with no questions asked and they will remain completely anonymous. Please remember that drop off locations will not accept any type of needles or sharp objects during this event.
DROP OFF POINTS: 711 Crawford Street (Police Headquarters, First Floor)
4001 Rivershore Road, Portsmouth Fire Station # 3
45 Afton Parkway, Portsmouth Crime Prevention Office
With the rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. at an alarmingly high, this initiative addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. Recent studies have shown that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, to include the medicine cabinet in our homes. In addition to the misuse and abuse of these drugs, the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses are also on the rise. We ask that citizens take advantage of this free event and dispose of their medications at one of our drop off locations in the city, as previous methods of disposal, such as flushing or throwing medication into the trash also poses a potential safety and health hazard in our communities.
