Parks Bureau Marine Patrol Deputy Recognized as “Boating Officer of the Year” #LASD @SCVLASD
The California Boating Safety Officers Association presented Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau Deputy Charles Weathers with the “Boating Officer of the Year” award on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, in San Diego, California.
Deputy Weathers is Marine Patrol deputy who normally patrols Pyramid and Castaic Lakes. The deputies in the Marine Patrol Unit are all Emergency Medical Technicians and Departmentally Certified Public Safety Scuba Divers. The Marine Patrol deputy’s focus is to maintain the safety and security of all the boaters and water enthusiasts enjoying the lakes.
In March of this year, Deputy Weathers saved the lives of a five year old child, his father and another adult whose kayak capsized plunging them into the chilly 50 degree waters of Pyramid Lake. Deputy Weathers recognized that the kayak and its occupants were in trouble before the boat had actually capsized and was piloting his boat directly toward them. Had he not been so observant and respond quickly to the situation, the outcome could have been very different.
Deputy Weathers has received two prior Life Saving Awards while working in his Parks Bureau patrol assignment.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau is dedicated to providing a safe and drug free environment at all Los Angeles County Parks.
