Standoff with suicidal Montclair man ends peacefully. More information will be released at a later time.
On Tuesday, April 29, 2014, John Chambers, a Montclair resident, was named as a suspect in a sexual assault of a child investigation. An arrest warrant was issued for Chambers regarding the sexual assault.
During the early morning hours of Thursday, May 1st, Chambers was seen near the area of his home located at 4300 Holt Boulevard. Montclair Police responded to the complex and established a perimeter.
During the search of the complex, Chambers was not located and it was determined he fled the complex avoiding apprehension. An extensive search of the surrounding area discovered that Chambers was hiding from police under the flood control channel in the 4300 block of Holt Boulevard.
Chambers was contacted by police and produced a large knife. Chambers placed the knife to his neck and other parts of his body threatening suicide. Crisis Negotiators from the Montclair Police Department arrived and spoke with Chambers. Negotiating with Chambers during the standoff lasted over an hour.
Chambers surrendered to police and was uninjured during the incident. Chambers was treated at a local hospital for preexisting medical conditions and later taken into custody.
