Lewisville Police warns - Be alert for scams
Lewisville Police Department wants citizens to know that scams and frauds come in many different varieties. It is wise to be skeptical when receiving any kind of communication involving paying or receiving money.
Recently, some Lewisville residents and businesses have received calls from someone claiming to be with electrical companies. The victim is told their power will be shut off at a specific time if they do not obtain a prepaid green dot card and call the "company" back with the code number for the card. Once the caller has the code, they can transfer the funds on the green dot card to their own accounts.
These calls are scams. No legitimate business would ask a resident to pay a bill in this manner. If you receive a call like this, contact your service provider directly to check the status of your account. Obtain the number from a bill, do not use the number provided by the caller or from an email as it may not be legitimate.
There are several variations on this scam, with callers claiming to be law enforcement, other service providers, etc. For more information on common frauds and scams, visit the Federal Trade Commission website at http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/.
