Phone Scam Alert: Callers claim to be utility representatives and ask for payment by prepaid cards and Green Dot Cards.

Scam Complaint: On 5/1/14, the Bensenville Police Department took a report from a resident about a scam artist claiming to be a utility representative.
The caller told the resident that their electrical service would be disconnected unless payment was made directly to the caller. The caller told the resident to purchase a prepaid credit card and then call her back with the cards personal identification number (PIN) to make the payment.
Gladly in this case, the resident did the correct action by not following the caller’s instructions, but instead, she called the police to make a report.
Remember, never provide personal information to anyone who comes to the door or calls you claiming to be a representative of a utility company.
Contact the utility at the phone number on your bill to confirm identity of the representative and nature of the contact, and always be suspicious of anyone who asks for your personal information or says you must pay immediately and suggests a method to get the money quickly.
Call the police if this happens to you and terminate the call.
The more time you spend with them on the phone the more likely that they will convince you.
