Sheriff’s Department personnel run to honor a fallen hero, Deputy David Powell, in Lakewood.
Sheriff’s Academy Class 399 participated in a class run through the streets of Lakewood Friday morning to honor Deputy David Powell, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 30, 2002. The class of approximately 100 recruits and the Training Bureau staff arrived at the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station memorial wall at 7:00 am. Prior to departing for a five mile run, they were given words of encouragement from Captain Merrill Ladenheim and Chief Dave Fender, who was the captain of the station at the time of Deputy Powell’s tragic passing. Also in attendance was Emma Powell, Deputy Powell’s widow.
The runners were escorted by Lakewood Station deputy personnel, who turned out to honor Deputy Powell as a reminder we will never forget our fallen brother. Members of the community and passing motorists showed their support by honking their horns, and at times, lining the streets. Deputy Powell was mortally wounded while responding to a call of shots fired in the city of Artesia.
