Red Flag Alert Still in Effect. With soaring heat, Cooling Centers now OPEN
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning that will remain in effect until 8p.m. PDT Wednesday, May 14 for the valleys and mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties for gusty north to northeast winds and low relative humidity.
The Monrovia Fire Department is monitoring the situation and will be conducting fire patrols in the Monrovia foothills.
Cooling Centers are now OPEN in Monrovia.
The Monrovia Community Center, located at 119 W. Palm Avenue, will act as a Cooling Center for residents who need to escape the heat. The Cooling Center will serve light refreshments with some activities and is open to the public:
- Wednesday (5/14) - Thursday (5/15), 8am - 9pm
- Friday (5/16), 8am - 5pm
- Saturday (5/17), 5am - 5pm
- Sunday (5/18), 12 - 10pm

If you plan to be outdoors, please take precautions to protect yourself from the sun and heat.
- Avoid the sun from 10am - 3pm when the burning rays are strongest.
- Reduce physical activity
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light colored, loose-fitting clothes when you are outdoors.
- Avoid hot, heavy meals that include proteins.
- Set your air conditioner between 75-80 degrees; if you don't have air conditioning, take a cool shower twice a day and visit a public air-conditioned facility.
- Check on elderly neighbors and family and friends who do not have air conditioning.
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol.
- Use sun screen with a sun protection factor of at least 15 if you need to be in the sun.
- Don't forget about your pets, they need plenty of water and shade.
- Insulate your home by installing weather stripping around your doors and window sills to keep the cool air inside.
