New evacuation orders have been issued for parts of San Marcos due to the Cocos Fire. Since it broke out on Wednesday afternoon (May 14), the fire has grown to about 1,000 acres. More than 13,000 phone numbers received the AlertSanDiego message by phone, email and text just after 1:30 p.m. in the Harmony Grove area.
200 Sheriff's Deputies and 70 officers from various law enforcement agencies are actively helping evacuate residents and assist with fire operations on the ground. In the air, three helicopters with the Sheriff's Helicopter Unit or ASTREA are helping to put out the fire in San Marcos.
Since the fire started, more than 42,000 AlertSanDiego notifications have gone out to people in the following areas of San Marcos:

• Harmony Grove
• Elfin Forest
• Coronado Hills
• San Elijo
• Cal State San Marcos
• Discovery Hills
Several road closures are in effect for the following areas:
San Elijo Hills:
• Double Peak Road at San Elijo Road
• San Elijo Road at Questhaven
• San Elijo Road at Elfin Forest
• Questhaven at Attebury
• Melrose at Boulder Ridge
• La Costa Meadows at South Rancho Santa Fe Road
• San Elijo Road at South Rancho Santa Fe Road
• Rancho Santa Fe Road at Melrose
Cal State San Marcos:
• South Twin Oaks Valley Road at State Route 78
• Barham at La Moree
• South Twin Oaks at Craven
• South Twin Oaks at Village

Sheriff Bill Gore says it is important for people to evacuate their homes if they are in the fire areas. "Obey the orders of law enforcement. Evacuate. If you've been asked to evacuate, we have the personnel in place to protect those neighborhoods, so when you come back to your residences there will be no vandalism and you'll return to a secure home."
Those that have been evacuated can go to a temporary evacuation site at Mission Hills High School located at 1 Mission Hills Court. San Marcos Middle School at 650 W. Mission Road and Escondido High School at 1535 N. Broadway also reopened as temporary evacuation sites. Small animals are welcome at Mission Hills and Escondido High Schools. Large animals can be taken to Cloverdale Ranch at 2460 Cloverdale Road in Escondido.
