The Southern Pines Police Department is alerting the community of an area telephone scam. Citizens and local business owners have reported they are receiving phone calls from a Duke Power representative, or a third-party representative of Duke Energy, stating their power bill is unpaid. The caller is telling people to go to Rite Aid and purchase a pre-paid debit card to make a payment or their power service will be disconnected. If you receive any calls of this nature DO NOT provide any personal information or make any arrangements for a payment to be made. Hang up the phone and contact Duke Power to check on the status of your account.
If you have been victimized by one of these scams report the crime to your local law enforcement agency.
