Kitty Hawk Police - School is out!
The Kitty Hawk Police Department would like to remind everyone that school is out for the summer and so are the kids. Each year more kids ages 5-14 are seen in emergency departments for bike related injuries. Motorists need to pay special attention to increased number of kids on bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. during these summer months.
Parents need to be aware of safety strategies to keep their kids safe when biking on the Outer Banks. NC Law requires every child under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. A detailed list of NC laws concerning bicycle and pedestrian laws can be found at the following link, http://www.ncdot.gov/bikeped/download/bikeped_laws_guidebook-full.pdf. See attached picture detailing the work of the Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition.
Parents also need to pay close attention to kids around water. Drowning is one of the top causes of death among kids ages 1-14. Swimming lessons, life jackets, swimming near a lifeguard and awareness of rip currents can aid in combating this serious issue. The Kitty Hawk Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. A few extra minutes of preparation before heading to outdoor activities can benefit everyone. Have fun!
