On June 6, 2014, the Altus Global Alliance organized the 7th annual “Police Station Visitors Week Global Conference and Awards Ceremony” in Antigua, Guatemala. This event brought together the top performing stations from “Police Station Visitors Week 2013,” including representatives from the United States, Brazil, Chile, India, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. The focus of the conference was on police reforms: Progress and Challenges Worldwide.
Altus is an alliance of six academic centers and non-governmental organizations on five continents around the globe working in partnership with government institutions to strengthen the delivery of public safety and justice. “Police Station Visitors Week 2013” was the seventh iteration of this unique global event. This initiative gives civilians an opportunity to visit local police stations and assess the services provided by police. In 2013, over 12,000 civilians visited over 1,340 police stations in 22 countries around the world. Besides giving civilians the opportunity to become better acquainted with the police, this event gives police insight into how their services are evaluated, and how to further improve them. The purpose of the Global Conference and Awards Ceremony is to recognize those police stations that visitors rated most highly, and share their practices nationally, regionally, and globally.
During the 2013 Police Station Visitors Week, East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station was chosen as the top scoring station in North America. East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station received a perfect score, scoring 100% in all scored categories, including: Physical Conditions, Community Orientation, Equal Treatment of the Public, Transparency and Accountability, and Detention Conditions. As the top scoring station in North America, Commander Henry Romero attended the Global Conference on behalf of East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. Commander Romero not only attended the awards ceremony, but he also put on a presentation regarding the challenges of providing values based policing in culturally diverse communities. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department- East Los Angeles Station is truly honored to receive such international recognition for its efforts in the community, and looks forward to participating in Police Station Visitors Week 2014.
