The hot news this week is the announcement of a big fireworks show at John Lott Park. Our fireworks show this year will be held on Saturday July 5th. The event will start off at 7:30 pm with the Lytle VFW serving up free hot dogs! The fireworks show should start a short time after 9:00 pm. Please note that the event is on Saturday July 5th not on the 4th. While it was the intention to have the show on the 4th it didn’t work out. We have heard there are going to be some awesome shows around us; I think Castroville is having a big one on the 4th along with their annual parade. One idea we tossed around was just chartering a bunch of fancy buses and sending our people over to Castroville. Then there was the issue of cost so that one fizzled. A couple members of the Citizens’ Patrol suggested we maybe build a big tall platform and let everybody climb up on it so they could see the show from here. We figured the city engineer would never go for that one. Then there was the idea of getting a bunch of hot air balloons and having them take citizens up on short rides to check out the fireworks. Then we all realized we didn’t know anybody with a hot air balloon or where you could even rent one. Since none of the police department ideas were “good enough” I figured our citizens would be left without seeing a fireworks show. Then the Mayor said “Well it is better to have fireworks on the 5th of July than none at all” (Maybe not exactly those words but more or less). So continue on with your plans for the 4th of July but don’t forget the July 5th fireworks show at the John Lott Park. Some people may not like fireworks but who doesn’t like free hotdogs? This will be an awesome kid friendly event so bring out the whole family. As a reminder the discharge of fireworks in the city limits is prohibited by ordinance, this event operates under a permit and those conducting it are specially licensed. Safety is our primary concern.
We did have a couple home burglaries over this past week, one on Bruce St. (Harris Trailer Park). A suspect has been identified. The other one on Juarez St. (in the Coalmine Subdivision). The homeowner discovered it when he returned home at approx. 5: 30 pm on 6/19. A vehicle of interest is a tan colored 1990’s model Ford Taurus that was seen in the Coalmine Subdivision around 2:20 pm on that date. It was occupied by two males and our witnesses didn’t recognize them as being from area. Any information you have would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Richey Priest, Chief of Police
