PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IN CROSSWALKS
On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, the Palmyra Borough Police Department conducted a safety detail at the "marked" crosswalk located at the intersection of West Cherry and South Locust Streets. Police monitored traffic approaching the intersection while a civilian volunteer pedestrian attempted to cross the street in the crosswalk. As a result, six (6) drivers were cited for failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, one (1) driver was cited for driving with an expired drivers' license and one driver (1) was cited for failing to drive on the right side of the roadway (driver passed another vehicle).
Palmyra Police wish to remind drivers that according to PA State Law they must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians that are within any "marked" or "unmarked" crosswalks at an intersection. Violation of this law is a summary offense and, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $50, plus costs of $92.50, for a total of $152.50.
Palmyra Police will be continuing frequent details of this type at all crosswalks (marked & unmarked) in Palmyra Borough.
