Two arrested for child abuse and neglect
Sergeant Chad Braden responded to a welfare check of two juveniles ages 12 and 13. The caller stated the children had not eaten in seven days and were home alone. Once at the address on Case Rd. Prospect Sgt Braden discovered the two children inside the residence which was in deplorable conditions. There was a 200 pound hog living in the residence along with one large dog. Officers saw feces and urine throughout the house. No food with the exception of beer in the refrigerator. No parents were at the residence. There were several syringes located in the residence and and the toilet was inoperable. Arrest warrants were issued for thirty-three year old Chad Wayne Coffman for 2 counts of child abuse and neglect and he came to the sheriff's office at the request of Sgt Braden over the phone and subsequently was charged with possession of firearm when he showed up at the Sheriff's Office with a Glock .357 sig pistol in his vehicle. Mr Coffman was not eligible to have the firearm because of domestic violence conviction a few weeks ago. Also charged was thirty-two year old Rachel D. Coffman with 2 counts of child abuse. Both remain in the Giles County Jail with bonds set at $7500 and $5000 respectively. The children were removed from the residence and DCS was contacted.
