Riley Fire responds to residence fire and reminds everyone of the importance of smoke detectors.
Riley Fire Department responded to a residence fire at 0209am this morning. Upon arrival three minutes later, firefighters found the residence of 6325 State Road 159 heavily involved in fire. The home was owned by Emory Counterman and was occupied by four adults at the time of the fire, two of which were sleeping in the room of origin and were awaked by smoke. There were no smoke detectors in the section of the home where the fire started, however all escaped without injury. Firefighters contained the fire to the room of origin in 30 minutes and believe the fire was an accident and originated at or near a window air conditioning unit. Honey Creek, Seelyville, Sugar Creek Fire Departments along with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the fire and State Road 159 was closed for two hours while the fire was extinguished. Firefighters remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke alarms in all sections of your home especially sleeping areas.
