Smoke Alarm Alerts Homeowner to Kitchen Fire, Saves Home
Maricopa, Ariz. (July 2, 2014) At approximately 6:15pm, Maricopa Fire Department crews responded to a report of a house fire in the 46000 block of Barbara Lane in the Meadows Subdivision. When crews arrived on-scene they found the homeowner outside reporting a fire in the kitchen that he had put out with a fire extinguisher. When firefighters entered the home they found the kitchen damaged by fire but no flames or heat present. Crews cleared the structure of smoke, ensured that there was no fire in the walls or around the stove with thermal imaging camera and turn the home back over to the homeowner.
The homeowner stated that he was in his garage when he heard his fire alarm activating. He went inside the home and found smoke coming from the kitchen area. He had a fire extinguisher positioned by the stove in case of a fire, and used it to put out the fire on the stove.
This fire illustrated the ideal response to a fire in the home. First and foremost the homeowner had a working fire alarm system that notified him of a problem inside the house and called him to action. The homeowner had taken the time to prepare the house with the proper fire extinguishers and have various ones places in the high-risk areas of his home like the kitchen and garage. He acted quickly and appropriately and his actions saved his home.
This is the second kitchen fire in the City of Maricopa in the past week. For more information on kitchen fire safety please visit:
