Vehicle Fire, possible arson - Azusa area

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and fire department personnel responded to a car fire about 1:15 a.m. in the 18600 block of Mauna Loa Avenue in the unincorporated area of Azusa.  The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the origin was deemed to be suspicious.

At about 12:25 a.m. on July 5, 2014, a 66 year old woman spoke to several people lighting illegal “mortar” type fireworks near her home on Mauna Loa Avenue.  She asked them not to light any more fireworks, and told the group she would be calling the police.  A woman in the group engaged in a brief argument with the resident. The resident did not recognize the woman or her companions, and described her as about 40 years old, five feet ten inches tall, and about 150 pounds.

About 45 minutes later, the resident discovered that her son’s car, a 1999 Camaro parked in her driveway, was on fire.  The fire department responded and extinguished the fire, but the Camaro was a total loss.  A 1997 Saturn parked nearby also suffered heat damage to the hood and driver’s side, estimated at about $2,000 damage.  Based on the fact the Camaro had not been driven for 2 days, and because of evidence at the scene, fire department officials suspect that the fire was intentionally started.  The Arson/Explosives Detail of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was notified and will continue the investigation of the case.

Sheriff’s dispatch records indicate that the victim did not call to report the fireworks or the argument.  Another caller reported illegal fireworks about 1½ blocks away at about 12:53 a.m.  A deputy arrived at about 12:57 a.m. but did not locate any suspicious persons or illegal activity.  The fire was first reported at 1:12 a.m.

Dispatch records also indicated that deputies assigned to San Dimas Station responded to 96 calls of fireworks-related disturbances in the period between noon on July 4 until 2:10 a.m. on July 5.

In addition to serving the City of San Dimas, the station serves unincorporated communities of Azusa, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, Claremont, Pomona, the Los Angeles County portion of Mt. Baldy, a large portion of the Angeles National Forest (State Route 39), and portions of Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2).
