Ronene Anda promoted to #LASD Chief and tapped to command the newly formed Transit Policing Division
Los Angeles County Sheriff John Scott announced that effective Sunday, July 6, 2014, Ronene Anda would be promoted to Chief and take command of the newly formed “Transit Policing Division”. Anda, who was given command of the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau in 2013 as a Bureau Commander, quickly began to turn things around at the unit that polices the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Southern California Regional Rail Authority or Metrolink. Shortly thereafter, then Sheriff Lee Baca had again asked Anda to head up another new unit within the Sheriff’s Department.
In stepped newly promoted Commander Michael Claus. He picked up where Anda had left off and continued to recreate and retool the bureau. All the while, an audit was being conducted of the policing contract by the Bratton Group for Metro. One of the key recommendations was that the Transit Services Bureau of LASD be made into its own Division within the Sheriff’s Department, to better manage the policing of the Nation’s third largest transit agency. Sheriff John Scott, who had been appointed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in February of 2014, knew that he needed real transit policing experience to lead the new division. Once again Anda answered the call, and returned to transit policing, but this time as a Division Chief.
The newly created Transit Policing Division (TPD) will be led by Anda, but familiar faces remain. Michael Claus will continue as Division Commander, Jennifer Bateman will remain as Captain of the Transit Bureau North, and Captain Karl Schow will continue to be the Transit Bureau South Captain.
Chief Anda said of her recent promotion, “One of the things that I’ve learned in my career is that you have to be ready for change. I thought that I would be at TSB as a Commander for a while, but when the Sheriff calls, you answer.” Asked if she was excited with her promotion, “Absolutely! We all strive to be the best we can and achieve our goals, but what I’m really looking forward to is taking this division into the next few years of growth with Metro and Metrolink. There will most certainly be challenges, but we’ll find solutions and will never stop keeping our patrons safe when they ride!”
