Parks Bureau Hosts 5th Annual National Night Out “Walk for Life” and Community Day Event
On August 9, 2014, the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department, local businesses, residents, community and faith-based organizations, will host our 5th Annual National Night Out “Walk for Life” and Community Day event, at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park. In addition, Parks Bureau will also host another National Night Out event at Ted Watkins Park. The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Parks Bureau has taken the opportunity to also use the event to unite and stop the violence and crime in the community, with the ultimate goal of promoting long term unity and peace in the community. The first event at Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the second event Ted Watkins Park is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Activities scheduled to take place will help to increase community collaboration, reiterate the importance of education to local area youth, and raise awareness to help increase awareness of health issues plaguing our communities. With so many uncertainties in our communities and society the one constant should be our dedication to the communities we serve. The significance of the “Walk for Life” is that it has become a model for gangs throughout Los Angeles. The “Walk” has united two notoriously violent rival gangs. The Raymond Ave Crips and Athens Park Bloods have not had a documented gang murder in several years. These men and women can sit at the same table and talk about their differences without the fear of bloodshed. Parks Bureau has played a large role in brokering the continued peace between those communities. Historically, we have been fortunate enough to showcase units like SEB, AERO, K-9, Arson Explosives, et cetera. Often times these particular units are only seen from afar and only in response to bad things occurring in our communities. It is imperative these communities get an opportunity to see the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a non-confrontational environment like the one National Night Out provides. In past years Parks Bureau events have drawn large numbers and helped the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department achieve national recognition for our success. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau is dedicated to providing a safe and drug free environment at all Los Angeles County Parks.
